Learn About the Dancers Unite Competition Company
Who is the Competition Company for?
The Competition Company is for dancers who show a high level of commitment and dedication to their dancing. Company Members represent the studio throughout the year in our community appearances and competitions, so we take great pride in only selecting those with the right attitude and commitment.
What kind of dance styles could I compete in?
You could compete in jazz, tap, lyrical, contemporary, hip hop, musical theater or acrobatic dance; however, you would need director approval to compete in each of these. It is possible to qualify to compete in some but not all dance styles.
What does the competition tuition include?
Dance competitions charge the dancers competing in a dance competition a fee called an “entry fee”. Other studios charge the customers entry fees on top of the regular tuition, but we are including this in tuition starting the fall of 2011. This will make things much easier for you, so that you will not have to worry about multiple payments and the fees will be charged to you in installments.
The tuition also covers unlimited dance classes at our dance studio (please note however that we try to limit class size so you will need to register early to take advantage of this) as well as choreography for the competition routines.
The tuition also covers a free warm up suit to be worn at all dance competitions Dancers Unite attends.
What does the tuition not cover?
Just like our non-competitive students, competition students are still responsible for the registration fee, costume fees and recital fees.
Will there be any fundraisers to help with the cost of competitions?
Yes, please contact the studio if you are interested in participating with fundraisers. Currently, we are doing a Charlotte Citipass Book Fundraiser, so please contact the studio if you are a Company member who has not picked up his or her books yet.
Why don’t I see when the competition classes are scheduled on the website?
You cannot register for competition classes online because you have to audition and be placed on the competition team. Therefore, we do not include the competitive classes on the schedule listed online.
Where will the competitions be held?
Dancers Unite tries to schedule regional competitions as close to the Charlotte area as possible. For example, last year for our regional competitions we went to one in Charlotte, two in Concord and one in Winston-Salem (our national competition was in Myrtle Beach).
Do you have required dance conventions the Company Members need to attend?
We do not require any dance conventions; however, we do suggest some local dance conventions taught by industry leaders and So You Think You Can Dance stars. We suggest more than one dance convention so that Company Members can choose the dates most convenient, the styles of dance taught they most enjoy, or they can go to all of them! We list dates for these recommended dance conventions as well as prices in our Competition Company Member Only Section.
Will my child wear any inappropriate costumes in his or her competition routine?
At Dancers Unite, we feel that it is important that children dress and dance like children. We try to keep costumes, music selections and dance choreography age appropriate.
What should I do if I do not make the competition team?
Keep trying, because there is always next year! We suggest you take some of our dance classes throughout the 2011-2012 dance year to better prepare you for next year’s audition. Jumps leaps & turns and ballet are good classes to take to help you with fundamentals.
